Why S.A.F.E. Narratives?
The Fragile Balance of the Digital Age
S.A.F.E. Narratives was founded out of a need to provide cybersecurity support to journalists and human rights activists, who are often subjected to pressure, digital attacks, and attempts at intimidation. Their work frequently involves investigating sensitive topics and challenging powerful interests, which makes them targets of online harassment, hacking attempts, surveillance, or smear campaigns. In Romania, these risks are amplified by pressure on the press, limited transparency in media financing, and difficulties in accessing information, as well as threats and intimidation campaigns directed against activists defending minority rights, gender equality, or the rights of vulnerable communities. At the same time, many journalists—especially freelancers or small newsrooms—and numerous civic organizations lack access to systematic training in digital security or to secure technical infrastructure.
In its first year of operation, Narațiuni S.A.F.E. aims to address this gap through projects that provide both practical protection and public education. Through the S.A.F.E. Guard project, we offer support to strengthen the digital security of journalists, activists, and NGOs. At the same time, we are preparing an awareness campaign on freedom of expression, non-discrimination, and digital rights, designed to raise public awareness and promote a safer and more democratic digital space (Stay S.A.F.E.). However, we are just getting started, and the services we can offer are still limited.
